Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to find a purpose.
From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that man is here for the sake of other men-above all, for those upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy.
Many times a day I realize how much my own life is built upon the labors of my fellow-men, and how earnestly I must endeavor to give in return as much as I have received. My peace of mind is often troubled by the depressing sense that I have borrowed too heavily from the work of other men.

この地球上における人間の存在はいかにも不可思議なものである。我々一人ひとりが、なぜとも知らず、しかし時にはその目的が分かった気になりながら、短い期間、この世を訪れる。
しかし日常生活の観点からしたら、我々にもはっきり分かることが一つだけある。
人間がこの世に生きるのは他人のため、とりわけ、その微笑みを、そのすこやかなるをもって我々の幸福を支配する者たち、そしてまた、同じ人間としての共感という絆によって運命を共有している、名も知らぬ無数の人たちのためであるということだ。
日に幾度となく私は自分自身の生活がいかばかり他人の苦労のうえに成り立っているか、これまで受けてきたものと同じものを返すためにいかばかり努力していかねばならないかを思い、他人の努力から借りばかりをつくっているという憂鬱な思いのため、心の平安がかき乱されることも多い。
